Accessing hotmail on dialup.

I have a problem accessing hotmail on my dialup at home (AOL)

I have previously had problems at a friend's on Tiscali and something else, both dialup, but no probs when she switched to broadband.

I emailed hotmail who talked about cookies, sent me what to do, but it involves the tools menu - which I haven't got!!! (No idea why)

I can get into the hotmail and move from inbox to junk email but cannot open any mails.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am not technical at all.

A friend tried downloading Java for me but it wouldn't install. (Hotmail uses Java to open I think?)

Any ideas?

You haven't said what browser you are using i.e. Internet Explorer.

If it's an AOL browser, I can't help but if you are using Internet Explorer try pressing the F11 key to get your Tools option back.

Hmm, that did something, but not what you thought it would!!

I have the toolbar that says File, Edit, View, Go, Favourites, Help

It would normally at work also have Tools, and it does show that as the page loads, but then it disappears!

I open AOL then use the blue internet explorer button to open pages that I can use, if that makes any sense?

    So I don't know what I'm using!

get ready for somebody to tell you that IE is crap and to download some other browser.

Go is usually at the end of your address bar so it sounds like your toolbars mave have been moved around and just can't see the Tools option. Or is 'go' a dropdown option, if so what's in it?
Also try pressing Alt & T and see if the tools menu drops down from somewhere
  • I had problems with AOL a long time ago, but found that once I'd fired up AOL, I could just run Internet Explorer as another window. You should be able to use hotmail from there. I guess you are looking within AOL, which is why there is no "Tools" menu

If you need to get to the Options menu within Internet Explorer, open the Internet Options in the Control Panel. To modify, view or enable cookies in Internet Explorer, just look at the "Privacy" tab.

AFAIK, hotmail doesn't use java to display anything normally.

Hotmail uses Javascript, not Java - make sure you have it enabled.

In Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level.

Scroll down to the scripting options and enable scripting of java applets.

I did this via the control panel and it didn't make any difference.

    And why the rolling eyes?

    Oh, this is so frustrating!

When you said "I am using internet explorer" I had assumed that you were now using a clean unadulterated install of IE, with all options like Tools available to you. ;)

Until you have a this, how do you expect to be able to make any necessary changes, to get it working?

As I have said previously, I do not use AOL nannyware so perhaps another AOL user may be able to help you if indeed any read this Techie Stuff forum.

If javascripting is the cause of your problem, this link will test if your browser currently supports javascript.
