3Mobile Broadband text message problem

Wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but I thought I'd go for the techies first!
I recently bought a PAYG 3mobile broadband USB dongle for my laptop as a replacement for my backup dialup when I'm travelling. However, I've been having problems registering for the online my3 account management/information service.
I'm not sure what happened, but something went 'odd' in the middle of registration and as a result I have no idea whether or not it worked or what the password for the account is. Normally that would not be a problem, as you can get the site to text you your password - except whenever I get a text from 3 in the dongle connection software, it always displays as a series of 'unknown symbol' squares rather that readable text! I tried cutting and pasting the messages into Word and other text packages, but no joy. And there doesn't seem to be any other way of getting a password reminder other than text message.
Anyone know how I can either fix the text reading problem, or another way to get the account registration/details sorted out? I'd like to lend the dongle to some friends who have just moved house and are still waiting for TalkTalk to get off their backsides and install phone and broadband (despite having several weeks notice), but give the exorbitent 'over limit' charges three levy, I want to get this sorted out first...
