daewoo matiz

hi guys
my daughter has got her driving test next week, and has been offered to buy a v reg daewoo matiz. i am not in the knowledge of cars, and was wondering if anyone has any advice on this car?? good or bad?? she is 21 and has put in a quote on a price comparrison site, and it is coming up less than half the price of any other small cars, ie, corsa, clio etc. have been told by a reliable source that it is a brilliant town car, as it is really good with fuel and easy to park etc. (engine size is only a 1.0) can anyone advise if this is a decent car for a first time driver as all we know at the minute is that it is going to be cheap to run.
i know it will depend on the actual car itself, but would like to know of the general reliability and day to day running.

TIA

Well, if she cannot park a Matiz, she will not be able to park owt! Have a look at Honest John websites car-by-car breakdown, and parkers.co.uk review section. Still made and sold as a Chevrolet... and sold in china as the Chevrolet Spark.

It's an OK car for a new driver, but not brilliant on the motorway.

  • take what you read on honest johns with a pinch of salt, you would never buy anycar if you took on board everything you read on there

I think with any car at this small price you need to take each car on its own and forget what the average is, as how they have been looked after over the last 10 years if a big factor

I think she'll find the Matiz OK, if a little old fashioned. IIRC it is based on an obsolete Japanese design, but there's nothing necessarily wrong in that. They have a terrible re-sale value, but as you're buying an old one that won't matter. If she likes it and she has it checked over by someone who knows about mechanics it should make a good first car, with low insurance and running costs.

  • Fuel pums are a bit iffy on them, but appart from that they are fun!
As said above - not too clever on motorway.

Just goes to prove that avoiding all the popular "I'm driving the same as my mates so I'm cool" cars, and instead going for the car no young people want that have probably been used by an elderly couple every weekend and well maintained is the best way to go.

Not sure what everyone means by !!!! on the motorway. I'd have thought it would be OK if kept at 60-70, no good for overtaking, and not very comfortable - but the car itself should cope.

Indeed, and it has 5 doors, which is useful, good value motoring.

They are lovely, fantastic if you live on a street like me where you have to shuffle back and forth at least 10 times to park or get out of a space.

It also has 5 doors, which I really appreciate.
