depends on how rough your walls are
the thicker the paper - the more imperfections it will hide
if the walls aren't too bad - use a thinner grade
remember to let them soak until pliable b4 hanging

As Nick says, depends on how bad your walls are. Are you papering over the top of the lining paper? If so, then you may get away with a thinner lining paper. If you are painting it then you will need thicker paper if the walls are poor. I've recently papered a wall using 1200 lining paper (a bit rough but not too bad!) and have painted on top. Pretty easy to hang too.
  • Don't know how true this is, but a decorator friend suggests putting lining paper up horizontally, rather than the 'traditional' vertical, saying it makes for a better finish.

Really bad walls you might be looking at two layers, one each way. ( cross hatch)
Your decorator friend might prefer horizontally but most people use gravity to help hanging vertical paper. It would fight you horizontally:D

Always put lining paper horizontally if you are papering over the top. If you are painting over it then it doesn't matter.
