Can anyone tell me what this is? Over the weekend a blurry green/purple outline has appear around the edges of our tv screen - JVC widescreen AV28 R25 - bought in 2004.
Does this mean that we are going to have to buy a new one......

No idea. Is it a CRT or LCD?
Your best bet is to pop over to https://www.avforums.com and ask there. There are lots of very helpful AV experts there. It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
If it's a CRT model, have you put anything magnetic anywhere near it?
If not, it may be a sign that the power supply is on it's way out, as that tends to affect the outer edges first.
It may just need a degauss. I think most recent CRT screens have a degauss cycle built in, but they vary in how they work - worth checking the manual to see if there's something specific that you need to do.0 -
You haven't placed speakers near it, have you? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

Make sure there is nothing magnetic near the TV. Other than that maybe the TV is dying? I'm not sure.0

Assuming its a CRT, it sounds like a failure of the degaussing circuit, this demagnetises the shadow mask on power up, cost me £60 to have a set with this problem fixed a few years ago. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

most tvs automatically degauss if you unplug them for a few seconds (the degauss cycle happens when turned back on).
edit - I also once paid to have a tv degaussed, only robbed £30 that time, but robbed I was, engineer only got the magnet out when i mentioned degauss, which I'd come across with pc monitors, before that it was going to be a £60 new part, since then I learnt unplug -fixed!Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
It could also be to do with a cordless phone stationed near to it.0

Hopefully OP has tried switching it off and on again, AT THE WALL.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I haven't put speakers or a cordless phone near it and have unplugged it and disconnected all the ancillary bits like the sky box and dvd player, Wii etc.
Still blurry round the edges so I am going to unplug it all overnight and see what happens.
Thanks again.0
