Sulphur smell?

I've been noticing a weird smell of sulphur in the house, I've had a look around on google and it seems it's coming from the hot water but I'm concerned it could be related to gas/the old back boiler?

Motsly I notice it in the bathroom if someone has a shower but have also noticed it in the living room where the boiler and fire are, but it could be coming from the hot tap or washing machine in the kitchen.

Does anyone know if it could be related to the gas?

We've got someone coming round tonight to give us a quote for replacing the boiler, if we cant afford it we'll get a service done on the old boiler to ensure it's safe anyway.

If it's the water is it something to do with our tank or pipes? Is it something we can sort ourselves or would it need a plumber? Or is the problem in the water supply and we should contact Scottish Water?

I have read that if it's the water and we are able to smell it that means it isn't enough to be poisionous.

get a spark to check the wiring to your shower and shower islation switches (pull cord or wall switch nomally) poor connections can lead to overheating in the shower or switches and smells a little like burnt fish - could this be it?

No it's definitely the rotten egg/sulphur smell - at least I dont think burnt fish smells like that

Our shower works off a pump so has no switch or cord that we use, unless it could be the wiring for the pump?
  • Hi Stella. My parents had a similar smell in their home which had an old back boiler. I managed to trace it to the fire which houses the boiler behind it, they had someone take a look and it turned out there was a massive build up of soot and the pilot light was burning away at it.

I'm not saying that this is your problem, but do have a quick peek under the back boiler to see if you can see anything over the pilot light just incase.

Try some gel type drain cleaner down the shower, bath and basin first -

We had a similar pong in the bathroom for months and we too thought it was related to the heating system - until the waste pipes blocked up completely.

As shower people the cause was insufficient water flushing the soap residues, hair etc. through the pipes and the result was more solid yuk in the pipework than water. (You would not believe the solids that came up when we first used the plunger).

Anyway the most effective method was the gel, and we now follow this up with a monthly flush of soda crystals and very hot water.

(Co-Op have 100% free bottles on one very well-known and well-advertised product at the moment).
