Kids packed lunches

My daughter (aged 2 and a half) has to take a packed lunch to nursery.
Problem is she's not a lover of sandwiches.

The nursery can reheat food just not prepare it on site.

She takes things like macaroni cheese, which she loves. Mini sausages & beans, pasta salads and I've gone blank at anything else.

Does anyone have some suggestions of the sort of thing I can send her with? Preferably things I can prepare the night before to save precious time in the morning.

  • Home made pizza slices. Pasties? Cheese toasties - or does that fall under sandwiches?

Pizza slices would probably go down well. The problem with sandwiches is that she just plays with them and takes out the filling.A toastie would be better as long as it didn't go soggy.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I used to send the kids to nursery with left overs from the night before. At first I used to cook it specially for nursery but when looking after 2 kids and trying to get ready for work I didn't always have the time.

In fact I often used to get complemented on the food I sent with the kids.

I try to send leftovers from dinner where possible, this is always great if we've had spagetti bolognaise or on Mondays with leftovers of Sundays roast, I just do extra veggies etc.

All summer I wished I could get her to eat a sandwich for an easy life but I guess it is much better for her to eat a hot meal once the winter comes!

I used to make a bit extra when I cooked an evening meal, then popped some in little tupperware dishes in the freezer. The other Mums used to think I was very organised but really I was just lazy lol.

I also used to vary things when they went to big school, things culd not then be warmed up. so breadsticks and crackers, chopped up salad, fruit and veg, pitta bread. The kids used to say that the other kids used to be really jealous of thier lunches. Packed lunches don't have to be soggy sandwiches.

Will she eat other bread products with non-removable fillings? Like a bagel with cream cheese on or a folded tortilla with melted cheese in.

What about "Lunchables" but home made rather than shop bought. Give her some little boxes with crackers, ham, cubes of cheese, pieces of apple etc., in. Mine love that!

They like quick pizzas too - spread a pitta bread with tomato puree, add grated cheese and any other toppings and pop under the grill for a couple of minutes.
Here I go again on my own....

Lunchables sound like a good idea, she can be a bit of a picker hence why sandwiches are a nightmare.
I'm making note of all these ideas before i go shopping in the next hour or so :)

mine love hummus to dip veggies, breadsticks etc. They also love little dipping pots of honey or peanut butter. Or maybe a cheese spread dip? Not the healthiest but if it gets carrot sticks down them then I'm happy.

DD often used to just eat the innards of a sandwich... I used to just put together what I would put on the sandwich (ie, chunks of cheese and some cucumber) and give her bread fingers or crackers on the side... She's 4 now and takes a packed lunch but often 'saves' her sandwich until she's on her way home...

Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.
