This is hopefully going to be promptly answered by titheref...
My mates got a golf on a y plate, the third brake light seems to have a faint glow, this is without the brakes being applied and with the lights off
Any ideas?

Not immediately obvious.
Brake light switches can be a problem, but thats usually if the internals brake up so none would work. Taillight gasket leaking water into the electrics?
When the brake is applied, do they all light up ok?:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. the other thing i noticed yesterday was on golfs of the same age the outer two led's on the 3rd brake light were glowing, is this a mod that people do or is that factory?0

Definately not standard, may be that the board that holds the LEDs has got wet and holds a residual charge? Not a common quick fix thing im afraid

I will be checking it all with a meter, if its too tricky to work out i will re run the wire to the 3rd and that should sort the issueDefinately not standard, may be that the board that holds the LEDs has got wet and holds a residual charge? Not a common quick fix thing im afraid

They're not LEDs, they're bulbs.
Possible causes to the OPs problem:
1) Poor earth.
2) Old bulbs that've gone black.0 -
They are actually LEDs im afraid, and only come as a complete bank, so if one goes you either put up with it or replace the whole additional brake light! Kinda rules out option 2 but could be worth checking the earths.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
