Are you mad? Isn't this the crux of the problem?

No you are insolvent and can go under if you can't pay the wages (you could go under for a £1 if you cant pay it back).
It does not mean their debts are greater than its creditors or assets.

Why do people think banking liquidity is different to any other company?

PS not mad no but thanks for your kind words.

PPS From what I gather banks are having problems financing their day to day stuff wages etc.
I heard off the grape vine HBOS were borrowing 7 points over libor pre buy out to fund day to day activities. They still have to fund running the business and if they are not making money at the moment or it they have insufficient cash flow it puts them at risk.
The same as any other company, individual etc.

Banks used to run a 50/50 lending deposit ratio, now most of them run a 70-80/30-20. Of course this is the problem

Yeah the FTSE is down 4.5% already and I've not even had a coffee yet.

Bit worrying. I'm keeping an eye on the Icelandic market. I've got a couple of cash ISA's over there. Not gonna bother moving them or try to as that'll just make matters worse. Don't want to see my money disappear. It could be a real pain claiming it back via the FSA.

Why do people on here think the goverment is less likley to nationalise a bank to guarantee depositers?
If they pay out 100% the tax man pays either way so I can see nothing else happening other than a green light for nationalisation or massive bail outs for banks.

where is the money going to come from if not the tax payer?

    Now down 5.27%

    Very scary!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Its only scary if you own shares, if you are potless like most of the country it doesn't make much difference what the FTSE is doing

I don't own shares at all...it's scary to me because it is an indication of how bad things are at the moment.

Of course it does not affect your pension fund or any other investment linked to the FTSE in some way!

Surely via pension funds etc an awful lot of people do have an interest in the FTSE?
