full time work, full time student and CT status

hey all,

I work full time, and Ive just started an MSc full time, I normally pay single person CT at about £100 a month.

Does anyone know what my CT status might go to as a full time student? But then I also work full time also.

thanks

Surely if you are working full time then you are only part-time student?

Not necessary as full time working is classed as 30 hours or above, and a full time student is anything over 16 hours. So it's possible to do both!

If you're registered as a full time student then you don't have to pay council tax. Income and work are irrelevant.

For CTax purposes a full time student is a person enrolled on a college, polytechnic or uni course that lasts at least 24 weeks of an academic year and requires attendance or study of 21hrs per week or more.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

my course is classified as being full time. Im doing an MSc over one year. Part time would be over 2 years.

The actual uni contact time is 6 hours one day a week and around 25-30 hours private study - yup and working full time as a field sales rep - so normal hours dont apply there!!

Thanks for your replies folks, it seems that I should probably be exempt from CT then. That will make a nice change!!

    Thanks

There's no probably about it - you''ll qualify fine for a Class N exemption. You need to contact you council and supply them with a copy of your student certificate which confirms you are full time.

I take it that private study means study that takes place at home not at Uni - Exc N states at least 21+ supervised study at college not at home.
Better get this clarified before expecting full exemption on CTAX

The actual rules regarding the Class N state the student must be undertaking 21 hrs per week of study, tuition, work placement or any combination of them .

see the council (discount disregards) order 1992.-section 4c.

The O/P qualifies for a Class N quite easily providing the uni will certify the course and provide a certificate.

If you had to do 21 hours of study at college then most undergraduates would be ineligible (which they're not). If a course is designated as full time then you're eligible for exemption.
