Techie Stuff to buy from USA

Dear All,
I would appreciate suggestions on techie / computer stuff that can be brought from USA. Kindly mention where you have found the best deals, both In-store and Online.
I am especially interested in buying a laptop.
Has any body got views about which Laptop Manufacturer provides the best International Warranty.

Thanks

You're probably not going to save that much once you add the delivery and VAT onto the cost.

Are they a UK citizen? If so, there will be import duty to pay.

I don't think it matters if they're a UK citizen, you just have to pay to bring things into the UK from the US over a certain value.

They'll have to pay sales tax in the US which varies by state, and isn't included in the displayed price. And then they'll have to pay VAT and possibly customs charges when they come back to the UK depending on what they buy.

Doesn't matter if you go through customs (nothing to delclare) your breaking the law.....so you must declare goods bought outside of the UK (you will be made to pay the tax) and have some snotty nosed person telling you off

However....if you read some of my previous posts I'm not very law abiding so if it works good on you....but just be aware of what can happen
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • Luckily I bought my alot of things for my digital camera in america, new lens being the most expensive.

I bought it in the US and it cost me about £150. Now if I bought that in the UK it would have cost me closer to £400 - £500.

Now me being the person I am, acidently forgot to declare the goods when I came through customs, but Cat is right - I've seen people coming through customs and getting searched because they never declared goods. So it can happen

It's not a question of it can happen; it does happen. Every day in fact.

there are certain products that import duty is not charged on, digital cameras, and laptops being one of them..

however, if they are over your allowance of £145, then you are liable for VAT @ 17.5%, so that works out a little bit better than having to pay duty and VAT...

  • Hi

Have looked but this seems the closest to what I may need.

I am off to America next month and I was going to hire a sat nav with my hire car but was too expensive. Looked on the Wallmart site and I can get a Tom Tom for about $140. I am thinking of buying one but would it just be a matter of changing the memory card to a UK map when I return home or is it more complicated.

They are the equivilent in dollars to pounds over there so seem a bargain especially as i got nearly 2 dollars to the pound when I exchanged in more happier financial times
