Does anyone see a Chiropractor?

1st off can I state I do not want medical advice please, this is a money saving query.
I have started visiting a chiropractor , he has said I need to go 3 times a week for the 1st month or so . It's £27 a pop! but you can pay for 12 appointments at a slightly reduced rate. I know every situation is different but does anyone know if this is common, I've never been to a chiropractor before and I do feel I am benefiting but it is a lot of money to me.
It wasn't until a comment on a request for a chiro on the scottish board made me think that it may be a big moneymaking scam. It does seem like a bit of a conveyor belt situation with 2 tables in an open plan office ie 1 person getting adjusted and another waiting already in position.
So basically what I'm asking is this usual or should I think about trying elsewhere?
Any advice much appreciated Vi

Difficult to comment as I have only limited experience, with 2 chiropractors in the past. I've paid a similiar rate to you, but have never needed anything like 12 appts.

Usually visited 2-3 times if an acute problem, and then maybe every 6 months. Obviously everybody's need is different, but personally I would not consider paying for 12 appts.

And I would not be happy with the "open plan office" arrangement, if I pay privately, I expect a little privacy, too.

Just my thoughts, I'm sure you will get other replies, too.

This sounds dreadful! Are you having to get undressed for this treatment? Can you talk privately with the therapist without someone else overhearing you?

What type of chiropractor are you seeing? I've had various kinds of back therapy and none of them would give appointments more frequently than a week apart.

Phone up a few other therapists in the area and check prices, privacy issues and average numbers of appointments.

There's more than one type of chiropractic, and I don't like the sound of your 'conveyer-belt' surgery at all!

I go to a chiropractor who practices McTimony chiropractic, which is a much gentler and (I find) more effective and long-lasting type of treatment. Details can be found here:

The prices are about the same as usual chiropractic treeatments, but the session tend to last a lot longer and I find I need less treatments overall. The method is also a lot more gentle and sympathetic than the usual 'cracky cracky' type chiropractic.

i have been seeing a chiropractor and now an osteopath for 4 years.

when i first started going , i saw them 2 times a week for 2 weeks, then stretch out to 1 a week, then fortnightly, then monthly,
now i go approx every 6-8 weeks, unless i have a mishap and need an appointment sooner.... sometimes i delay the appointment by changing it to a later date
nb: i pay £37 per session but claim half back from HSA

my treatment is in a room on my own with the osteopath and lasts 30 mins

personally i would find another one, first looks are important.....
can your doctor recommend one or a friend/relative
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Well he thinks it could take about 18-36 appointments to get me better and then of course there would be maintenance:eek:

No I'm fully dressed don't even have to take my shoes off, I do feel a bit exposed and would have problems discussing things. There is a private office where I had the initial consultation.

Sounds a bit different to the one I'm visiting. Oh dear I am so stupid:rolleyes: thing is he was recommended by a friend. Think I will have the treatments I've already paid for (can be in & out in 5 mins is that usual?) and look around for somewhere else. Will just say I can't afford it anymore which isn't really a lie.
Thanks everyone for your advice looks like you've saved me a few hundred pounds already

  • Violetta I'd maybe look into the Alexander Technique instead of seeing a chiropractor. As much as I loved my chiropractor and the treatment was great, all they can really do is attempt to fix a problem. Alexander technique will teach you how to carry yourself and improve your posture so that you're less likely to do the same damage to your back and the sessions tend to be much cheaper.

Also bear in mind that as scrupulous as your chiropractor may seem, they still need to turn a profit and may encourage you to keep returning when you maybe don't need to.

As others have suggested shop around.
Find someone and somewhere that you like the look of.
You should be assured of privacy and be comfortable.
If you are tense it is not going to help your problems at all.

It may be that there are alternatives, as already mentioned the Alexander Technique might help.
What about trying Pilates is that an option?

I have been to a couple of chiropractors over the years but the one I went to recently is great.. he has a room in his home that is made over to a treatment room very relaxing and comfortable , he charges £30 for a session of 45mins and he only advises me to go back for more treatment if the problem doesn't clear up after the first session.. no booking app for months in advance only if I feel it necessary...

EDIT; forgot to add that he did give me 3 different stretchs/excercises to do at home ..

  • I see a Chiropractor. I had two treatments a week for the first 6 weeks and am now moving to one treatment a week. I also pay £30 per session, my first few sessions were only 10 minutes  but this gradually increased. I have a long term problem that is improving slowly. I'm hoping it will go completely given time

I used to see a chiropractor and eventually stopped as it was getting so expensive. i found that the adjustments were not happening - but in a weird way i think this was because i was so tense that every adjustment was very slow. i think if you find a good chiropractor you will get the results that you need - try to get recommendations if you can. it is worth looking around for the right professional as the wrong person can cause more damage than good/
