What was the stupidest/highest value item you bought that contributed to debt?

MAC cosmetics - had never heard of them till earlier this year, don't even wear make-up much, but I spent £3500 in about 2 months trying to get the entire range because I loved the colours. Fortunately I came to my senses around September and sold it all on Ebay - got back the money I spent and made about £700 profit, but it made me look hard at my kleptomania. If I saw a film with an actor I like, I'd try to buy all their films on DVD; ditto with authors and books. But I've stopped doing that - sold most of my DVDs on Ebay, got 5000 books to sell on that I'll never read again, and it'll be nice not to trip over piles of books and junk. It's just stuff cluttering up the house. I used to justify it by saying I never go out socially (except to friends' houses for dinner or they come to us). But I had my lightbub moment when I got Martin's book and started posting here, so now everything's logged on a spreadsheet (all colour-coded and cross-referenced between worksheets) and I've completely revolutionised my spending habits to plough everything into my debt, and feeling really good about it. It's been such a help knowing I'm not the only one in debt.
JulesThe ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0 -

Hee hee that reminds me - back in 1991 when I was a student I paid £1000 for an Amstrad PPC512, described as a portable computer. Every time I moved it between home and college it blew a fuse and sulked - I gave up in the end.

I guess i was a bit stupid when Littlewoods gave me a £500 credit limit then when i reached it they put it up another £500 without finding out if i was working or could afford to pay it back
I mean £1000? It's temptation in your face  I should have resisted but it's done now

Snap, over the period of about 2 years i too spent thousands on Mac, Chanel, Estee Lauder, YSL and all the premium range makeup and skincare. It looked impressive whenever i stayed anywhere overnight but to be honest, i only used a small amount of it. I sold mine for what i could get.wigginsmum wrote:MAC cosmetics - had never heard of them till earlier this year, don't even wear make-up much, but I spent £3500 in about 2 months trying to get the entire range because I loved the colours. Not too expensive, but paying £250 on an ortho-keratology contact lens that gave me two months of fuzzy vision was a bit of a waste0

Borrowed quite a bit to do a course, but got injured and havent worked in that field since. The rest was blown on going out, beer, more beer, coinciding with poor finacial management. Did i mention beer!
Trying to sort it all out now.0 -
Probably our house - we did the "it's got potential" thing without really thinking that potential costs £££££s and thousands of them!0
