Your wedding sounds lovely! :D I love the idea of a Wii party at a wedding :D :T

Yep I have a renovation fund - a necessity with my flat! Its a do-er -uper (all I could afford in 2002) so it needs a fair bit of work! Its habitable and functional (not for much longer in the case of the bathroom  - its falling to bits) but its certainly no looker. I'm with you on the ikea dreaming though (kitchen too ) ... and the carpet buying dreaming!
So why are you avoiding your diary - anything I can help with?
Not really but thanks for the offer! I'm contemplating finally doing a PhD and can't plan properly until I know all sorts like if I can get funding to do it at all with the grades I have + experience and what I'll money to live on while doing it (ie whether part time or full time)! It is all a big question mark so I can't really plan any future payments etc as I have no idea what I'll be doing... Hopefully I'll hit my bathroom fund target Aug/Sept but after that who knows! I'm just feeling a bit of a fraud on MFW at the mo... :o

You definitely need to have a balance in your MF journey - You still need to enjoy your life while doing it! If doing work on your home & enjoying your life while doing your journey to MFness means being offset a wee while later but a happier life for the couple of next years then by all means do it. Its not supposed to be a prison sentence or a form of torture!
    Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

  • I think we need to stand back a bit and take a moment to say well done to ourselves, instead of placing increasing pressure to save, save, save. If the MF date slips a month or two that won't make much difference then, but it will make a huge difference to our wellbeing now if can cut ourselves some slack.

You've both hit the nail on the head - as the Chinese say, make haste slowly!

My original target was mf by 40, but I missed this by some way. I wouldn't change this though otherwise I'd have missed out on some truly memorable holidays and nights out.

We only come this way once, don't focus on being mf to the exclusion of living your life

You are doing extremely well, my only comment is to support the idea of ensuring you have a balanced approach to this and include some items of benefit along the way such as a good holiday then you have the honeymoon next year anyway. You never know what lies around the corner so plan a balanced approach rather than defer "everything" until MF.

Yup, I'd be pretty annoyed if I or OH got run over by bus tomorrow. Would it be worth it? In short, no. We ARE doing a great job on OPing and we should make the most of life here and now.

  • Another weekend has come (yay!) and gone (boo!) but it has been a good one. Got into the gardening and planted up a nice clematis and honeysuckle (courtesy of my Auntie who popped round for a Sunday BBQ - first of the year!). Yesterday was spring cleaning, buying a few treats for the house and planning some DIY.

I hope you will all be very pleased to hear I blew the cobwebs off my purse and bought a few bits from Homebase on Saturday (and before you ask I had a voucher to supplement!). Had a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde moment mind. After filling the trolley my spending willpower wavered and I nearly ended up abandoning the trolley & contents. What persuaded me to keep going was the echos of your little MFW voices imploring me to "live for the here and now!" Well, that and the flaming £1 that I'd had to put in the trolley in order to use it.

Hope everyone else had a top weekend. Let's hope the next week holds some exciting stuff in store..well, we can live in hope hey?

You are most definintely not a fraud. Even if your circumstances are such that you can't make the payments you want to at the moment, it is the intention and frame of mind / thinking that is important. Plus the help you give to spur others on in their quest should never be underestimated.:D

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • DIY didn't go so well. Refreshing the kitchen ceiling with a new coat of paint seemed such a good idea but when it started cracking and peeling off it was a bit depressing! Not entirely sure what went wrong (something to do with calciate plaster) which doesn't allow the paint to stick to the plaster I think. Anyone got any bright ideas?

This month has been better than last and things don't feel as "tight." Probably more attitude than anythign else LOL. Paid in my £500 op and £200 savings (both offset against mortgage) so am happy with that. OH had a tighter month than me so may not be able to op his full £500 but not to worry, we are doing well between the two of us.

Will update my sig and pm Zavarony with the details for MFW 2009 challenge thread once OH has confirmed his ops for the month.

Also feeling particularly pleased with myself as a cheeky little request to First Direct, who we recently remortgaged with, has paid off. We opened joint savings and a current account at the time but didn't open individual current accounts nor transfer our current account banking across (dds, SOs and salary etc). Anyway I noticed that they were doing the £100 offer on opening 1st Account with them and meeting certain criteria. I knew we had missed the boat on it but thought I'd ask anyway and guess what, they are going to pay me £100 for transferring by current account banking to them, once my salary is paid in at the end of May.
RESULT! :rotfl: That will mean a little bit more spending money for our trip to the Lake District at the end of May - yay!

Hope everyone doing ok and looking forward to a nice long sunny weekend.
