No contents insurance

Hi All,
I am in need of help and advice. A few weeks ago my hot water tank leaked and the water damaged my neighbours (down stairs) cupboard that he kept his laptop in and it is now broken. He does not have contents insurance and wants me to replace his laptop but I can't afford to buy him a new one and I want to stay friendly with him because he is my neighbour. Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Cheers
Mike

You are only legally liable if your actions we negligent and this resulted in the loss. I would offer maybe half, simply as a good will gesture.0

claim for his computer on your household contents insurancemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Your own contents cover will only cover your own possessions, or pay out for things you are legally obliged to.
You are not obliged to pay anything unless negligent, but if you want to keep the peace, then you should consider this.0 -
If someone chooses not to insure their property, why should they expect someone else to pick up the bill for something that isn't their fault? The neighbour should use the money he's saved on insurance to pay for repairs to his laptop.0

dont be silly, cogito, if you had no car insurance and i came along and
scraped your car with my bumper, would you pay for your own damage,
no, you would expect the person who caused the damage to pay for it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

The situations are not the same. In the circumstances you describe, the car driver is negligent. In the OP's situation, that does not appear to be the case. FlameCloud is correct (as indeed am I).0 -
You dont know that yet, it has not been establisehd whether the op has been negligent or not.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It is up to the OP's neighbour to prove negligence, not for him to prove he wasnt.- and for something like this is would be very hard to prove.0
