I'm not really sure who to thank, but I visited this board about two weeks ago after it became clear that if I did not sort out the problems with my debt then I could lose everything, inc. my wife and children.
Basically I always seemed to think that as I was the man, and the person bringing the money into the house, I should be the person that takes care of all the bills.
I wasn't doing a very good job of it - we're about 24k in debt (not all of that is unsecured though) and it has become impossible to pay everything each month - It was just getting more and more out of control as I was paying off my monthly fee for the car onto the credit card.
I had the chance to get out of debt twice, when we moved home - both times I paid some of it off but just got back into it.
My wife kept asking about finances and said she needed control - she felt like she had none and it all came to a horrible clash a few weeks ago when I finally admitted to her about all the debt.
She was a lot better than I thought - she just sat down, talked about it and we said we would speak to my parents and see what options we had.
Then I visited this board, and read about Payplan. I went to their website and phoned them up the same night. A few days later I was given a call with a full breakdown and told that with the new job I am starting next week I can be out of debt in just over 3 and a half years.
I was astounded firstly at what a short period that was - all my estimations saw 5 years as a long shot.
The paperwork has since come though and I will be chosing a new bank account shortly where I can't go into overdraft and get charged stupid fee's - hopefully once we're into the new year Payplan will be all setup and it'll be like a new life - things will be tight, but a whole lot better.
It's so nice to see a light at the end of the tunnel, and if it hadn't have been for this board I don't know what we would have done.
So thank you to MSE and to everyone on here for your posts about DMP's and showing that if people in a much worse debt situation can do it, so can I.
Cheers
J

jlittle, :T :T :T
What a superb post. It's really good to hear from people who are facing their problems head on and are ready for the challenge. Most of the posts on this board are the pleas for help so it is really refreshing to read a succes story (well, it will be in 3 years
).
Just make sure anytime you need help or a kick up the !!!!!! to come back here and post. Also don't be afraid help others, you have the experience and knowledge you have gained from this horrible debt and it is really rewarding when you can help people like yourself.
Good luck with the DMP.

They have a 24 hour 0800 number, but after 9pm it's just a message service. That call is extremely hard to make, but the staff their are fantastic so far.0 -
