Areas to live to Newcastle

My friend's hubbie has a job in Newcastle and doesn't have anywhere to live. He's looking for a flat to rent - but doesn't know the area. Any suggestions as to where he should avoid - he just wants a decent area, not too posh cos too expensive!

Certain areas such as some parts of byker or scostwood aren't the nicest of areas to live in, but has he tried coming south of the river, in to gateshead.

Depending on where the job is in Newcastle, large parts of gateshead are within 10-20 travelling time, and it opens up a large number of extra options.

A large part of gateshead is covered by the metro system. or within easy reach.

The metro stretches as far as sunderland, approx 35-40min on the metro, or south shields, approx 25-30min.

My son rents in Jesmond, nice area lots of bars & places to eat, but it depends what your friend is looking for, Jesmond seems to be mostly students/young professionals and can be a little expensive. Very easy to get into Newcastle centre on the Metro, only takes about 5 minutes.

  • I used to live in Jesmond up until 2003 and can highly recommend it - property and rent prices very high though.
There are very good transport links in and out of Newcastle so living a little out of the centre and surrounding area can save you a fortune. My boyfriend and I now live in Northumberland. He travels to Newcastle every day and doesn't find it a problem.

  • Avoid Fenham - my student daughter had her car torched out the front of her accommodation. Here's the funny side of that story, when the insurance guy came to collect the car, it had disappeared! It was a complete burnout, and neither the police or council had collected it!

Is your friends husband going to be working in the centre of Newcastle? How does he intend to travel to work eg. will he use the Metro or does he need to drive? If he is driving and working in the centre it will take him longer to get to work from south of the tyne as traffic can be quite bad on a morning. I agree with hte other people who have said that Jesmond is nice and also convenient for the city centre but quite expensive. After Jesmond I would recommend Gosforth still not cheap but a nice area and good transport links into the centre. There is a new block of flats right next to the metro in Gosforth, they are probably not cheap to rent but the transport links into the city are fab from there. If you post some more info we can probably help you more.
  • Can I also recommend Low Fell? Used to live in Newcastle 10 years ago and have friends living in this area who I go back to see a couple of times a year. Pretty respectable area, varied range of housing (eg early C20th terraces, semis, larger Victorian terraces), some decent pubs and shops. Good bus routes into Newcastle or to Gateshead Metro station. Not sure about prices but I'm sure it's cheaper than Gosforth where I lived.
