  • Go and look in places likeMamas and Papas and John Lewis to see what you want and then order it off the internet from someone else, we looked at this and then checked the internet and found we could save £300 off everything.. nursery furniture including cotbed and expensive mattress, pram, carseat etc.. the whole kit. We then went to The Baby Show and bartered a further £200 off the internet price. We got kitted out with a Bugaboo and all the acessories Mamas and Papas nursery furniture, Maxi-Cosi car seat and a few other items for £1300, which sounds a lot but if you consider this would have been £1800 in total through the above stores then we did pretty well. If you buy it all from the same company then you are likely to get a better discount off the whole lot although the initial bill may be a bit hefty.
  • I've bought almost everything online, except my buggy. OH said we had to get it from John Lewis, as it was expensive and we would have come-back if anything went wrong. How right he was! We are on our third buggy, as the first two were horrendously squeaky. I am very glad I didn't buy it from a random website.

There is a shop in Wandsworth called Swallows and Amazons who sell second hand baby items. It is in a very affluent area and they have designer label clothes and good quality equipment at reasonable prices.

I did my research on my pushchair at John Lewis (a Quinny) and then bought it on a day trip to Calais...saved about £200 that way. I also used kiddicare.com but found their service to be very bad and very slow delivery. But kiddicare do have a "multi purchase" discount which is handy if you have friends who are buying stuff too. Me and three friends all bought the same high chair within about a month of each other and stupidly did not buy from there...

Also if you are going to places like mothercare, go to the bigger branches like the Croydon superstore rather than a local one like Wimbledon. There is much more choice.

Don't buy a second hand car seat, and buy it at a reputable outlet like Halfords...it is simply not worth the risk. The Halfords in New Malden (on the A3) has a great man who gives lots of advice and carts it out to your car to check it for you.

I also recommend (like an earlier poster) the Which Guide to Baby Products - it pointed us in the right direction with things like car seats and steered us away from other things that were not really necessary.

John Lewis in Oxford Street has a system where you can make an appointment with an adviser...we did this and there was no pressure and they were happy to spend an hour or so demonstrating pushchairs and car seats to us.
  • There is a good place in Croydon (Brighton Rd/ Denning Ave) has most major brands although it is a small place. They price match including internet prices and have some fairly good deals themselves
