Printing probs - U.S. 'letter paper' v A4 paper!

Options
I'm trying to print some stuff from an American source. It is mostly graphics and has been formatted for the American standard "letter size" paper (8.5 x 11") rather than A4. My printer refuses to operate with A4 paper as "letter” format has been automatically selected by the software. I have tried cutting down some bigger sheets of paper to "letter" size , which works fine but is very laborious and wasteful! I've had a quick squiz to see if "letter" paper is available here but haven't managed to find a source. What I would like to know is...whether it might be possible to re-jig to get the stuff to fit on A4 paper and to get the printer to accept it. If so where would I start, (programme or printer??). Printer is a HP Deskjet 5552.

I can print just fine with my home-made, cut-down, letter paper and with 'letter' in printer properties....I'm wanting to be able to print on A4. When I have A4 paper in the printer it doesn't seem to make any difference what is in printer properties, either 'letter' or A4...it still won't print!

  • What happens on the printer when it refuses to print the Letter format? On my printer (not the same as yours), it goes offline to give me the opportunity to load the correct paper. I then just press a button to put it back online, without having changed the paper, and it prints as normal.

The printer does nothing at all and I get the message....'The paper size selected in the print dialog box does not match the size specified for this project'

Start with the program. Look for something like 'page setup', 'paper size' or somesuch. The program's 'help' facility will, er, help.

  • Assuming it's an office document, try adjusting the "File->Page Setup" menu to be A4. This will reformat the document to A4, so check that it looks OK before saving it...

If it's another package, look for a similar menu option under the file menu.

Edit: Aargh - beaten to it... :(

  • Is there a Zoom option in your printer driver ? Most of mine offer to shrink/expand the printing to suit the paper in the device depending on what the application demands.

Failing that can you use a PDF maker (like FreePDF) to print it to (FreePDF appears as a printer) ? and then print on A4 from Acrobat Reader.
