What would you turn this garden into - PICS!!

Hi All!

Said I'd be back here again, asking for help!!

I've now, more or less cleared the area, rotovated & sort of levelled it
(but that's also showing how unlevel a large area really is) & ready for your input!!

I've also dug over & removed 7 barrow loads of stones, from a 1mtr width, along the rear fence, with intentions of this being a border. The main area to be grass seed, with the side sdpace, initially grass seed, but later, maybe a veg plot.

The main problem, is the 'fall' of about 30cm, towards the corner, where I've laid boards (outline area of a summerhouse perhaps), to hide the view into the garden behind. Note there are 2 drain covers here, as well, so access needed.

My thoughts were to terrace the space, where the dropdown is more apparent & carrying along the side, level with the deccking, towards the summerhouse, with steps down, onto a bark chippings base - so we could change it if need be, without too much £$£$ or hassle. Ideally a hot tub would go in this place, in the future!Does that sound as confusing, as it does to me?

BUT...Mrs V is keener on just a large grass covering, right the way around, initially. despite the contours, that'd be hard to conceal.

The front garden, can stay as it is for now, I think!

trellis against the oil tank, I suppose??

So, what I'm asking, is.... WHAT WOULD YOU ALL DO!!!!>??

Thanks in advance!!

VB

  • WELL YOU HAVE DONE ALOT OF WORK!!!!!!!!

for me it would be a typical potager, lots of raised beds - paths with gravel or bark and lots and lots of veggies and flowers.

I wouldnt put a lawn in - but then again i think grass is a waste of space, its expensive, its hard work and its timecomsuming!! (not that I am biast)

I think you can a truely productive garden, with fun bits and carve out your own personal space bits - first and then figure out which beds where with a mryiad of paths and lots of lots of food!!

Then again, I am secretly living the good life!!xx

OH MY GOD! That must have been such hard work!

All I'd think of would be a lot of grass seed for the moment, a bit of planning around the veg patch which would go in that section by the green house and behind the garage.

And then a really nice lie down :D

You've done so much work there, well done.
I hate to say this though .. I think you should move the greenhouse away from under the trees to somewhere it will get more sun.

I too hate lawns but in the short term it might be easier to grass it and then tackle it bit by bit.

It's a lovely big garden, it will be great!

The only thing I can helpfully say is don't lay any permanent paths yet.

A story I've heard is that when the British army takes over a new base, they immediately lay paths where they think they ought to be.

When the US army takes over a base, they put it all down to grass, and wait.

When they see where people walk, they lay paths there!

We've only just put it there!!!!

It WAS in the space between us & neighbors new fence, but it took up too much room - 'cos it had wasted areas around it. Plus it meant we'd not be able to get proper access, if needed, to the rear.

So behind the tank & between the tree was easiest, to not have it anywhere 'awkward'. & there's still plenty of sunlight, to it - I hope!!

    Agree with that one, Sue!

That's why I thought the bark chippings would be a sensible choice - easy to alter & not too much £$£$!!

Now that you have made such great headway and whilst it is in that state. I would consider doing a karcher job on the mildew fence and get it treated, even if it is only a wilkinson stain. Forget grass, you have more than enough over the fence, you need contrast. I'm going to think about this. What you don't want, is to obsure the view over the fence, but at the same time, a bit of hight wouldn't go amiss. I coming down on the side of little (maybe raised area's) that you dont see fully untill you are actually there. Let me think a while.

Put the stones on freecycle and get someone to take them away for free to use as hard core.

Agree the fence needs sorting - I've to re-fix several sections/posts, too, & have some HGV lory cleaner to wash it off with, in the garage!!

Was actually thinking of replacing with a picket fence, along the back, to take advantage of, as you say, all that field & the 2 Highland cattle living there! The only not so nice view is where the conifers finish, right in the bottom corner, as thats actually got their compost bins behind our rotten fence - hence thinking of summer house, with some height to instantly conceal the gap - & views of their parking area - sometimes got vans in there & we can just see the tops of them from our decking.
