Standby not working on Windows XP

For the last few weeks, when we click on Standby, the computer screen give the message "Going into Standby" and then goes black. When we move the mouse to go back onto the computer, the screen goes through all the start up process instead of going straight onto desktop.

Please can anyone help with this?

It's always a driver issue. Check the hardware manufacturers websites for new drivers. Don't use Windows Update as all that has on is out of date generic ones.

Yup Conor's right.

For me it was a buggy driver for a cheap Taiwanese wireless card I had. There weren't any updates available in my case, but the problem was solved by going to the device in device manager and disabling an option like "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" (I can't remember if that's exacly it.)

Maybe if you've added new hardware yourself recently, try the same for the offenmding hardware.

Thanks to you both, but we haven't got any new hardware!!! Neither of us has any computer knowledge, even the jargon is like Chinese to us, so if you have any more ideas, please be gentle!!
