Improving Website Popularity/Ranking

Hello,

I've got a website which is involved in selling properties in the south of france. I'm trying to improve my google ranking i.e getting higher to the top of keyword searches and getting my ad up the top in the pale yellow section.

I'd read that advertising at the top of google can cost up to $10,000 pcm - is this true or is there another way I can do this more cheaply?

Any tips on how to improve my ranking/popularity are welcome. Or any other ideas.

The whole system of getting to the top of google is called SEO. Google it, there are various methods of doing it, but if you're really desperate to do it, just employ someone.
I do mine for myself.

I have been a PHP website developer for some time now. Mainly dealing with bespoke PHP applications for clients I have still had quite a lot of experience with SEO. I'll include some really simple SEO steps in this reply. Basically, what you need to do is look at who's ranking No. 1 in the search results for your specified keywords... Then copy them, making sure to better them slightly to get to No. 1.

1. Say you search for money saving in Google. moneysavingexpert.com comes number 1 in the rankings. The first thing to do is replace the search query with link:https://www.moneysavingexpert.com. Now, if the market is saturated with these websites, and this website is ranking number 1 then you'll get pages and pages of info from this search. This lists every website Google crawls that links to moneysavingexpert.com. This is a pretty major factor in your Google page ranking. The more RELEVANT external websites that link to you site the better. Note these sites and do something about getting your links noticed on them. A word of advice. Getting your links onto spam sites or sites Google deem's unfit will quite quickly get your site dropping off the radar completely never mind page 100.

2. Analyse your competitors pages with keyword density checkers and the link and get your pages to match closely to theirs. Another word of advice. DO NOT just copy text from their website to yours. Firstly you may be infringing copyright, which could bring a lawsuit your way. Secondly, Google is also pretty good at catching this and is another sure fire way of getting your site dumped completely off Google. There's a whole host of tools out there for checking keyword density etc... Google it and use them. One point to not here however, cramming your page full of nonsense words to up your keyword density will easily be caught out by Google and you'll be down the bottom of the rankings in no time.

3. Another attribute that determines page rank is website age. The longer your URL has been visible to Google the higher up the rankings you will appear. Not much you can do about this though other than wait.

Googlebot is pretty smart, just make your site relevant and clear and get it to as many relevant, and well regarded websites as possible.
