Council tax

Don't know if anyone can answer this-have tried my council website but it doesn't have this info.

I am on IS and was told back in May that I my ctb will cover the complete amount of this years CT. My daughter turned 18 in August, and I was told then that providing I provide the Student exemption certificate once she got to Uni,I wouldn't have a bill for her either and this years bill would remain fully paid by CTB.She is living in the halls 70 miles away.

I gave the certificate in and it was acknowledged, but I keep getting final demands and yesterday got a 'pay in 7 days or we take you to court' letter-despite the fact I went in the centre on Thursday and it was confirmed the certificate and student loan details were on the system.

I would like to know once and for all whether I am liable to pay this or not. Several people in the advice centre have told me no-and no-one has said yes. But the demands have been coming now since 7th September.

On Thursday the advisor told me to just ignore them, but I don't feel comfortable with that. There is no telephone number I can use-you have to go in the advice centre-and I have been in there 5 times about this now.

Just don't want to ignore, get a summons to court and then find I was liable to pay all along as then I will have costs added. At the same time, I don't have £247 or anywhere to borrow it!

If you are on income support and your daughter is a student, there is no council tax for you to pay as you are classed as a single person and so would get the 25% discount and then as you are on benefits, it is all covered by ctb. No you don't have to pay. I would go down there with the letters and demand to get it sorted there and then.

The non-dependent may have a deduction made on CTB for the period August to start of term - but provide letter stating that she had NIL income for that small period - also provide latest Child Benefit award letter to show that you still in receipt of this.

You will not be classed as a single person for council tax purposes as there are two adults in property when she turns 18 but daughter will have a 25% disregard as FT student 21+ hours plus in supervised study.
In all should have a nil CTAX bill when recalculated.

Child benefit this year didnt finish till the 25th august,as the op dd was moving to halls,i would assume around 18th sept for freshers week then there might be a 3 week period where some CT was due,but then again if the daughter had no income even thats unlikely
I have to say from experience that some dwp and council benefits staff are clueless when it comes to situations like this, when I informed them last year that my daughter had moved out they demanded to know her new address,i flatly refused to give it to them and still havent !

Well have been back today and am still no nearer solving this! The bill is comprised of my daughter being charged the amount for an adult minus 25%,payable from the date of her 18th birthday until end March. I gave her national insuirance details, which show she has had nil earnings since Feb 2007.The same woman I saw on friday who said my bill should be nil is now 'not sure as you've recieved a court threat!' (as if that could never be a mistake!) and there was no one senior to ask as they were all being retrained this morning. Lets hope the retraining covers this subject! I have been promised a call back tomorrow-if it doesn't come then I suppose I trek back down to the advice centre on wednesday which is the busiest day,as the 7 day period quoted on the threat ends on thursday.I have just typed out a letter querying the bill, giving info I have gleaned from you helpful guys and and am going to take that with me on wednesday should it not get sorted tomorrow.

    Thanks for everyone's input.
