If you want to make a valid comparison, you really need to compare them to Vista. If a Linux distro requires less RAM than a contemporary edition of Windows, then it's hardly a lie to say that Windows is a resource hog.
Why not use comparisons including all of the versions of Windows that are still supported by Microsoft?0 -

On the basis of absolutely no research or experimental evidence, I'd reckon that playing it from the laptop's own HDD would probably be most power-efficient, because that would almost certainly still be running anyway, whatever additional device (such as a Pendrive) you might use.
If you could persuade the OS to spin down the HDD and just read from a pendrive that would probably be the most efficient, but I suspect that you won't be able to do that.
If you were to run both the OS and the DVD from a pendrive and turn off the HDD, you could probably save more power - but that's not exactly convenient...0
