Choosing Kitchen appliances?

We had a kitchen design done by Homebase last week - and I'm quite happy with it, not a bad price just for the units + worktops but the appliances were very expensive! So we've decided to get our appliances elsewhere, they should be ok with that shouldn't they? We are getting another quote from Wickes so might change to them but I can't see much difference between the units so will probably just go with the best quote.

Anyway we are having white gloss units and a light wood (laminate really) worktop. We already have a silver fridge-freezer and a white washing machine so need to get an oven, hob, hood and sink. Would it look best if they were all the same colour? I was thinking stainless steel oven and hood and white sink but not sure if they'd be better if they match. We do have a black gas on glass hob that we were going to use as it was an ex-display bargain but didn't realise it was larger than standard and we only have a small kitchen so thinking about selling it on ebay and buying a more compact one. (and apparently we'd need a bigger hood to go with it so don't really have the room)

Any advice on colours, and where is the best place to buy?
Thanks :)

I tend to look around the shops at what I like and then go home and look at www.pricerunner.co.uk to find the cheapest price :) I don't click through from pricerunner though as I have quidco open too and check whether the supplier is on there first ;)

Of course you can buy your appliances where you like. I think one colour is nice and uniform although it's a pain to get that because you hardly ever get to buy everything at once. We've got black glass hob, oven and sink and our other stuff round the corner in the utility area is stainless steel or silver.

  • Thanks,
I've had a look around the shops today and found a stainless steel cooker, hood and hob that I really like and think will look good. It was in homebase so am sure I can get it cheaper online.

It's made by Candy though, has anybody had any experience of their appliances? I tried googling it but looks like they don't have a great reputation :(

I would keep away from stainless steel. It can be a swine to keep free of finger prints, and spots. Of course, if you are looking for work, go ahead.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I don't find stainless steel harder to clean than anything else. I have a thing for 'shiny' and generally wipe everything over with a spray of multisurface cleaner and a wet cloth and then dry it with a tea towel conveniently held in my other hand :) no water marks to speak of.

My aunt just replaced her Candy cooker after 16 years. It was still working even if it wasn't very pretty!

  • Try the IKEA bargain area for Whirlpool equipment with a 5 years guarantee. These are smart stainless steel appliances and often have a 60% reduction because the box has been marked etc

The Coventry store seems to always have a couple of appliances discounted whenever I go there.

We have just done our kitchen and I picked up an integreted dishwasher for £177, top of the range combi over for £225 and saw their £450 combi microwave for £225 last friday.

Ikea's appliances are all made by Whirlpool, and come with a five year guarantee. Most other manufactures tend only to provide one or two years guarantee, with the stores looking to cash in on extended warranties. I got their four ring induction hob, and it doesn't even have the Ikea brand on it. The hood, oven and (concealed) dishwasher do. The appliances are all standard sizes.
  • I would say yes get a stainless steel oven and hob, but dont get a white sink, a stainless steel sink would look a lot better

Also are you sure about a wood style worktop on white gloss? I guess it depends what floor covering you are having. I got a dark worktop and softened the whole look with an oak laminate floor. Shame I cant decide on a wall colour now, might just leave it white!

I bought my oven from there. Saw it cheapest on pricerunner from there, collected it from the shop and saved the delivery too :D
