Bank mis-advice!! Please help me!!

Hi - I am looking for some guidance! I went to see my bank for a full financial review, thinking I was being sensible! I had what I thought was a good session, and discussed my credit card balance. The advice I was given was to apply for a new credit card and transfer the balace to it for a 9 month period at 0%. This was the advice the woman gave me bear i mind!! So, she filled in the form for me and I duly signed it off. More than a month later i received my card, and yesterday when I tried to activate the card and do the transfer I was told it wasnt possible. The reason given was that both cards were RBS cards, so why did this woman suggest it??? As far as Im concerned, I have been ill advised and mis-sold a credit car which I have no inention of using. Meanwhile this "advisor" has no doubt notched up another credit card application for her monthly target. I feel really cheated and let down, and now feel back to sqare one with regards to clearing my credit card debt. If anyone can help me, and I apologise for this long winded rant, I'd be very grateful.

Did you tell her you had an RBS card (i'm guessing it was MINT?)

If you did she really should have known that a transfer wouldn't work. If not then it is not exactly her fault.

I guess they might make a goodwill gesture of the months extra interest you have paid?

Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

Hi - yes, she was fully aware it was an RBS card (yes, a MINT card!). The irony being it was the same girl who advised I get one in the first place! She even tried to acces details of my credit card on her computer saying it was funny she couldn't as it was an RBS card!
  • Hi Bra10J

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I think you should go back to your bank and explain to the same incompetent woman the problem she has caused. Then ask her what compensation she is prepared to offer you for her poor advise. If you don't get anything positive, ( my hunch is that she will not), ask to see her manager to formally complain about her incompetence.

You could apply for another card outside the RBS group, but you could be declined due to your recent application. In view of this, perhaps you could insist with your bank to offer you a 0% overdraft.
  • Get a letter to the complaints dept pronto insisting that that they accept the transfer. The bank is clearly at fault here. Make sure you get the girls name that gave you the advise.

  • Do you have another card that you could use to pay off the Mint card? Then you could use the new RBS card to pay that off. If you dont have another card yourself do have you a partner or family member who would transfer the debt to their card. (Not RBS of course) then you can pay that off with new card, there will be some interest to pay, but I'm guessing youre already paying interest.

A good idea in essence, but as I said, why should Bra have to go to all that hastle when the bank is obviously at fault here.

I have always had success when you write to the bank and complain. Simply tell them what happened and then how to put it right (i.e Dear Bank, you've done xxxx and as a result I am £xxxx out of pocket. Please put it right... etc etc)

In this case I would expect the bank to, at a minimum, allow the transfer to go ahead and refund any interest that you have had to pay because of the delay. (you could probably ask then to do it fee free because of the hassle too)

Remember, this is a consumer revenge site. We've got to come down on the bank like a tonne of bricks when they make a mistake. Im sure we've all had those "we have charged you £30 admin fee due to you going over your overdraft by 1p for a millesecond" type letters!.......

Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck what ever you do...
