Missing Gas bills/free gas - should I alert them to this?
Options
I have been living in a flat, which is part a victorian conversion in London. When the the energy crisis hit, I began investigating switching suppliers. Here's lies the probelm. No one knows who supplies my gas! I've contacted both BG and EDF, both of whom have supplied my gas over the last 4 years I have been here, yet neither claim to be my supplier. My gas meter and the property's unique ID do not match, so I have not received a gas bill for over a year. Do I try and sort this out again (I have tried) or keep schtum and leave it down to their stupidity? What are the legal implications of this? I just don't want to get shocked by a lump sum once they (whoever they are) discover the error. Thanks

It does not matter if the meter and the MPRN do not match. That can be sorted. If your property does have a meter point reference number though it should show up on somebody's system. Does it start with 74 or 75? This could mean it is with an independant pipeline company. Have the companies also tried variations on your address? ie is the conversion 1 and 1a or a building name?
I'm sure someone will be along shortly with more advice.Although you can only be billed for 1 year I would be concerned in this situation that possibly the bills are going somewhere else so I would try to chase this up.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0 -
I would not rely on the 12 month idea. If it can be shown that you didn't attempt to get it resolved a supplier can back-bill you for virtually any period of time.
Call Nat Grid Gas as a starting point with your meter serial number. They may be able to track it down.0 -
I'm at the point now where I'm moving out and will let my flat out to new tenants, and I still havwen't received a gas bill.
Should I simply switch to a new gas provider and then change the name to the new tenants, or leave as is and let the new tenants sort out a new gas supplier?
Thats not very resposible I know, but no one has chased me for unpaid for gas, although I have tried to rectify the problem. Does anyone know what the legal requirement is for back payments?0
