RTA Advice Needed?

My partner had an accident yesterday, his fault, and the car is now almost certainly a write off. It's been recovered to the recovery compound and the insurance company have advised that they will contact us on Monday to do the necessary.

Can anyone advise what happens next? I have had accidents myself in the past but have been non-fault so was all handled by solicitors.

They will arrange for a vehicle inspection, after which they will offer to repair or pay you for the value of the car.

Find out now how much it is worth and what you would be happy to accept, find adverts of similar age/miles/model cars for sale today.

Once you have accepted their offer or argued for more and then come to an agreement, they will send you a cheque. You buy a new car and then arrange a new policy for it. You will have lost 2 years NCB unless you are protected against NCB loss.

Your base premium will be increased due the own fault claim.

One thing I'm not sure about is whether you can put your new car onto what's left to run of your existing policy - Anyone know about that?

Basically you just look for another car come to an agreed settlement with the insurer and that's it.

    pretty much as above

you should be able to transfer to cover to the replacement car..might be added costs if its bigger /newer etc

might be worth refusing thier first offer of a payout as they often try it on , have a look in autotrader and online to get an idea of what cars like your damged one sell for in good order

When my sisters car got stolen and it was written off no policy ended there. She bought a new car but had to get a new policy.

Some policies end on a total loss claim, others don't.

It will be in the small print of the policy

You are all assuming that it was insured under a Fully Comrehensive Policy, if it was TPF&T, a different set of rules apply.
