Can't get on line after power cut

Hoping you can help. My neighbour's electricity tripped whilst she was on line this morning, and now she can't get back on line. All the lights on the router are on, and signal strength is excellent. All we get is the message that no internet connection can be acquired (Firefox and Internet Explorer). Tried repairing through Windows but to no avail.

We have tried a different router, changed all the cables and the splitter but cannot get on line at all. We have even tried a system restore. She has two pcs, one running XP Pro and the other Vista, and we have tried them both. Have also tried connecting without a firewall, and also unprotected router but to no avail. :(

We are both tearing our hair out by the roots wondering what it could be. It was working perfectly well before her electricity tripped so what can it be? Surely not the router, because it would have worked when a different router was connected. Ditto all the cables. Anyone any suggestions?

  • You could try & turn the router off for about a minute, the reeboot your comp. If this doesnt work then you could try resetting the router, there should be a small buton on the back or underneath of the router, hold this in for about 10secs. then reconnect to your comp.

    Hope this helps.

If you do reset it, you'll have to re-enter all the details (her username / password etc.) by accessing the routers control panel once it's physically connected.

Come to think of it, going into the router's control panel just to check that everything is entered correctly might be a good starting place.

type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (whichever works) into the address bar of I.E. or firefox.

  • At most it will ask you for the wep key & password, it should then connect to the comp. Have you tried a sysyem restore on the comp from the last time it worked(prior to the power cut?)...

We had a problem with ours this evening but switching off both computer and router and restarting seem to sort the problem, dont know if its due to the weather although ours is ok at the mo.

I'm with Sky and get the same problem if the router gets switched off. I find turning off the router, then restarting the pc, then turning the router back on in that order seems to do it. Doesn't always catch it though, but if after a couple attempts it doesn't work leave it for a bit and it will sort itself out (most routers and pc's have auto finder functions to make it kick in when its ready)

-this is how my pc works anyway.

  • Thanks to all who replied. :heartsmil

Have already tried all your suggestions except for resetting router to factory defaults. Neighbour has gone out today, so will be trying that either this evening or tomorrow evening. Please keep your fingers crossed, as she is using my pc to pick up her email and I have to keep vaccuuming the dog hair up before she comes over and it's wearing me out!;)
