Anyone who says you need a rewire without running any tests is a clown, as already stated get a P.I.R0

darkstar,
if you have enough experience you can take one look at the fusebox area and know automatically if it needs any testing, so maybe this electrician was just trying to save the OP an inspection fee.0 -

So if I go to a house with lead cabling in use and old switchgear with fused neutrals I should still suggest the customer pays for a full Periodic inspection?
Anyone that can't tell if a job is a pile of tat before testing shouldn't be doing the work.
The first part of a Periodic Inspection is visual, and you only proceed to do tests if it is safe to do so. If the wiring is so obviously bad it may be dangerous to test furtherbaldly going on...0 -

Profesional advice would be to get a full PIR (periodic inspection) done.
This will take most of a day and should be done by a qualified electrician.
The qualification for Inspection and Test is City and Guilds-2391
Only use someone who holds this qualification, ask to see the cert.
The person who does the PIR will ideally not be the person who eventually quotes for the work that is identified by the PIR.
The PIR will take most of a day and will cost around £250.00, give or take but not much more.
The power will be off for most of the day and acess will be needed to all points.
You will recieve;
A report
A shedule of tests
A shedule of test results
Observations will be rated 1-4
(1= dangerous 2 = need improvement 3 = further investigation (usually due to lack of access - make sure access is available! 4 = not to current regs (not as god as current installations but not dangerous at all)
Do not ever consider a re wire unless a full PIR has been done to outline exactly what is wrong with your existing instalation, the only exception to this advice might be during a complete renovation when re wiring makes more sense.
Good luck.
How long have you been in the game ?
No wonder you have a fat belly most of the day must be taken up eating bacon butties and drinking tea.
Half a day tops and if its knackered you can tell in about 10 mins.
you dont need to test !!!!!! if the installation is in poor condition you are just wasting your time and customers money.
just put on test sheet full test abandoned due to lead wiring etc.0 -
If you find it does need a re-wire then that quote sounds more than reasonable to me. My 3 bed detached with solid walls was £3500 a year ago, other quotes were 5-6k, and that was when empty as well.
Hell of an upheaval though - try and avoid it unless you can move out I'd say!0
