Can I claim a refund off my credit card for a purchase

I lost a jacket the same day I bought it last year and someone told me I could get a refund if I claimed on my credit card, I didn't believe them, so never did anything about it, but I just bought an expensive watch last week in Gran Canaria and already smashed the entire face - is it true that my credit card provider will just refund me?

  • hi!, im not 100% sure on this but i dont think as standard you are covered unless for example the product was faulty when you bought it or it developed a fault. I did however have a card once that featured some kind of insurance as a benefit of the card against these things, so may be worth asking them.

Other ideas...I don't know if you damaged your watch whilst abroad, if so your holiday insurance may cover you, alternatively look at home insurance for expansive things you damage. Mine has been upgraded and includes fulla ccidental damage to personal posessions both inside and outside of the home so that may be a possibility for you.

No, they won't refund you. Refunds need to be initiated by the place you've bought it from.

You've damaged the watch so its your liability so you'd have no case for a refund.

Not strictly the case. Some Credit Cards do carry an insurance policy covering damage\theft on items purchased for a certain period of time (3 months would be typical for this type of policy).

It does tend to be the high end cards that carry this protection so the OP will have to check their specific card as to what benefits it carries.

I have claimed on just such a policy when a jacket was stolen from my car. The fact that I had purchased the jacket on a Credit Card saved the day.

Its definitely worth a call to the Card Provider.

I'm guessing from the tone of the OP that they haven't gone down this route, but
we'll see what the card provider says. I'd be surprised if they do.
