Whats the difference in energy used?

Wonder if anyone has worked out the difference in energy use (of if you have an energy monitor could do) the difference of a sky box.

Im led to believe even on stanby they use a high proportion of energy.

DOes anyone know how much is used on standby and how many when on?

  • There's lots of things that do use power even when they seem to be off. You can be sure the sky box does use something but don't stop there. Invest in a plug monitor device (maplins sell them at £14 odd but often they are around half price. Lidls look like they have an offer on soon too http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20081009.p.Energy_Monitor.ar1).

It will save you the cost of the unit by trying out all your appliances and changing your habits.

I think it varies according to the model(they are made by different manufacturers)

My old Sky box used approx 14 Watts on standby and the newer Sky+ and Sky HD are about the same.

14 Watts is by far and away the highest standby consumption of any modern electrical appliance.(all my TVs are less than 1 Watt) However to put it in perspective, even left on 24/7(and costing electricity a 10p/kWh) it will cost approx £1 a month.

I had a big row with Sky about Sky multi-room. As I spend a lot of time abroad I switched off the Shy multi-room box. This is against the T & Cs as it must be either on or standby and connected to your telephone line.

The real reason for this is that I could pay for Sky multi room and then give the box to, say, my son, to use in his house.

I've got a Grundig 'Skybox' and that takes 20 Watts on standby, thats why I turn it 'Off' when I'm not using it.
