Media Player and IE crashing

Media player keeps crashing when playing videos, I'm certain its a codec issue (based on what I've read online) how do I uninstall/ re-install new ones to fix the problem?

Noticed now that my IE also crashes often, considering re-installing both to solve the problems but not sure of what I may lose if I do.

Any help would be great.

    Codecs ~

DONT uninstall IE unless you have version 8 (beta). Which version do you have?

    Maybe infected?
Download Malwarebytes, update and run a QUICK scan

Not sure which version of IE I have, how do I find out?

Used Malwarebytes, found a few nasties that were missed by Norton 360 (with the new update), AVG, Spybot S&D and windows defender. cheers for sending it over to me. Will give it a few days to see if that works before trying new codecs.

    WOWA
You have AVG AND Norton running at the SAME TIME?
You need to switch one off NOW (I recommend getting rid Of Norton, its pap)
Uninstall it and make SURE its completely gone
Then install Comodo Firewall (ONLY if you remove Norton, NOT avg)
    http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
Untick the extra rubbish you done need when installing (Toolbars etc)
Also if your using TEATIMER through spybot, do NOT use Comodos 'defense' mode (Or rather id switch tea timer off and DO use defense mode)

I don't use them all at the same time! I have norton running constantly but use the others just to run scans when I need them. I like the friendlyness of Norton (particularly since the upgrade) but thats not much good when it doesn't actually ever find any viruses! I'll make the switch.

Although not using all at the same time AVG does safe scan my google search results which prob means it is running in one form or another. I only just managed to save my PC from some nasty issues a while ago and went a bit protection crazy! now have quantity over quality  !

    Not wise that mate
you should NEVER have 2 anti virus 'real time protection' programs running at the same time. And you should also NEVER have 2 firewall programs running either (This ones even worse)

If you take my advice, disconnect from the net (safer), uininstall Norton COMPLETELY (this MUST be COMPLETELY gone before attempting to install the firewall)
Make sure AVG runs on at boot up and its version 8
The other program I recommend to scan with every so often is ADAWARE

When using SPYBOT, make sure you UPDATE, IMMUNISE and scan

You might have guesssed it, already got Spybot installed aswell!! Only use it for scans, I have found that between them they will pick up different viruses.

I'll go back to square one and get rid of Norton

IMMUNISE with it James. It blocks certain nasty web pages and pop ups without using ANY cpu power (Simply puts a list into the browser)

Why would you want to use Internet Explorer anyway?

While you're updating your security, you might as well switch to a decent browser like Firefox.

Anti virus now re-shuffled, PC seems slightly quicker due to the lack of Norton presence.

Still having problems with IE randomly crashing. Been searching for answers and it seems it may be caused by a plug in, thats just my un-educated guess though.

Any ideas? -it doesnt crash often, so should I just grin and bear it?
