ISA, Savings - help

I'm getting some cash of 10k and I want to put it into saving I'm lead to believe that an ISA is the best way to do this but surely they are limited to around 7.5k? As well as this I would like to start savings every month maybe around £200 its my intentions to save for at least a year maybe two so having instant access to my cash isn't something that I will need maybe a fixed term but I have heard about banks going under and consequently I'm not really sure where to put this cash. I understand that ISA can be cash or investment but I don't really get the difference and are you only allowed one? If anyone could shed some light on ISAs and a savings account it would be much appreiated as previouslly I was a student and not really in a position that I could save - any advice would be much appreiated - thanks
