Smelly frozen onions

I noticed value onions in Tesco had dropped in price (88p to 49p) so I bought 3 bags (6 kilo's) and chopped them up to freeze. Today I opened the freezer lid and    . My kitchen stank of onions for 2 hours.
Does anyone know if the smell will go away? Or have any tips?
Regards

There are a couple or three air freshening tips right at the start of the Cleaning section of the MEGA Index sticky.
