JSA claim after Temp Contract End??

Hello there. I posted on the jobseeking board a few weeks back and only had one response so thought I would double check here.

OH is currently working under a contract basis and was expecting to be given a permanent contracts. However, the company yesterday declared that due to the "credit crunch" they have decided they have enough staff so over 100 people will now not be getting permanent contracts they were expecting. Its now known that OH will not be given a contract and will be unemployed as of the 8th November (unless he can find something in the meantime).

Will he be entitled to JSA? I am assuming that he will as its a temporary contracts natural end and he is not walking out of a job? (The contract was for 11 months). We are already looking for another position for him - and got a shock with the lack of jobs available in his area. Also, in Jan 09 he is due to have an operation on his hip and could be out of action for anything from 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on what they do when they get in there. If he is not working by then, how does it affect any JSA claim? We know that if he is working then he at least gets sick pay.

I am currently a SAHM and pregnant. If necessary then I can go back to work in Feb 09 - I just need to know all the relevant information to cover all bases please.

If you work, to the best of my knowledge he will not be entitled to JSA. Since you're not working he probably will be entitled to JSA - £45ish a week if he's under 25 and £60 a week if he's over 25, but it depends on what benefits you recieve too (if any)
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!

The only "benefits" we get are the usual child benefit and child tax credits. And he wishes he was under 25 again!!

If the contract comes to an end or he is made redundant, he will be entitled to JSA without sanctions. Depending on his NI contributions for the previous two financial years, it will be either contribution or income based. He will be able to claim for you and the kids as well if you're not working. Also you will be entitled to LHA if you rent as well as council tax.

If he is on income based JSA due to insufficient NI contributions, any amount will be affected by any working tax credits you have coming in.

Thanks very much for this. He does have a couple of interviews lined up already but 2 of them are for temporary Xmas posts until the New Year. As he is having this hip operation in Jan 09 it does suit us. But is he entitled to claim anything in Jan09? He would not be in a position to look for work so I guess JSA is out of the question. Would he be able to get IS instead? (This, of course, is only if I am unable to find a job myself at this time having not worked for a few years is going to be a bit harder than him!)
