Limit for car insurance claim

Quick question.
Is there a time limit whereby someone can make a motor claim against you?
The background is that last month I have a very minor accident where someone drove into the back of me after a bit or "argee bargee" in a filtering situation.
Luckily I have a tow bar so they didn't touch my bodywork.
They drove into the back of me and I have an independent witness (he did not have anyone who stopped at the time).
Most likely nothing will come of it but how long do I keep details for?
I expect the legal limit is many years, but how long is the practical limit?
If someone brings a case in 6 or 12 months, won't they be treated skeptically for not reporting it at the time?
I'm going to keep the details but I was just wondering how long they can bring something.
My FIL had a personal injury claim brought against him 18 months after the incident but medical things can take some time to realise the full impact whereas car damage is instantaneous.

You can make a claim against the third party for up to 6 years (when the claim is for damage only - no injury involved when the limit is 3 years)0
