Solar panels, missed that bit. I would hope that'd pay something back then for so much spentThrugelmir wrote: »I never expected to see base rate reach 0.5% in my lifetime.
So nothing should come as a surprise.
Particularly if the UK struggles to rein the budget deficit.
Markets turn very quickly.I will never forget Black Wednesday, when rates increased to 15% in ONE DAY. That made me keep a hedge against interest rate movements from then onwards.I very much doubt interest rates will ever be above 3% again in our life time.
Are you old enough to recognise this, its a letter posted for 2.5p in the 1970's before they had to raise interest rates. We all wish they didnt have to rise now too but they do.
Never say never0 -
Government is happy to see 3% inflation.
72/3=26 years and the government has halved the debt burden - well that is the idea and by then most of the de-possessed pensioners will have died anyway.
believe it or not, that increase from 2.5p is only inflation compounding at about 7% a year.

Still fair value when compared to house price inflation?0 -
Its going to take alot of demand destruction not to see rates rise massively. 3% over 26 years would amount to 115% in interest on the original sum for a lender just to break even
A global winter lasting a few years would about match current market expectations, this would be deflationary:

Surely a "volcanic winter" would cause massive inflation as 7 billion people tried to bid for much reduced food supplies.

The last volcanic summer was probably one of the factors, coupled with the Napoleonic wars that inspired Malthus to realise the dangers of an island without food self sufficiency.

Just compare the price of spuds / carrots this winter with the price say 2 years ago.0 -
Get out while you can.
How can 12 people think this is worth debating. You may as well post the price of copper from a few years ago.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
