I dont agree at all with what Raksha said...is the breeder to turf her lounge or something? lol.
I think the breeder is spot on with paper training the pup, and moving the paper gradually nearer the door. Especially as puppies have such weak bladders, they dont have that much control of them at this very young age. I have used this method with my dogs and with patience it works!
No the breeder doesnt' have to turf her lounge at all - puppies are quite capable of getting well away from the bed/nest area. My oldest dog was bred by a gamekeeper, whose dogs lived in the house. The nest area was in a utility room and from about 4 weeks those pups had free access just about all day to the garden - they quickly learnt that was a good place to go and wee and poo. Using a substrate indoors is only really important if the owner has no option once the puppy is home but to leave it alone for short periods - then a piece of turf in a cat litter tray, or a paving slab can encourage the pup to only go where the substrate is. Once the pup can 'hold on' they can be left with no option but to hold it, and never ever learn they can go on newspaper or anything else you might find indoors.......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0
