Gas boiler and bonding

I recently had a new gas boiler installed. I have an electrician doing some work on my house and he said the boiler installer should have bonded and earthed the new boiler as the previous one was done as per the regs. I asked the boiler guy about this and he said 'Your gas installation meets with the Gas Safety Regulations in that there is an earth bond on the gas supply within 300mm of the gas meter, that is as far as we go.'
I dont know what to think now. Should the boiler installer taken care of this or not? Does this cause me any issues not having this done?
Also, i have not received any documentation apart from a boiler guarantee and instruction manual for this installation. No gas safety certificate or anything. He keeps saying he will send it through in the post, but as yet I have not received anything. We had installed about a month ago.
Any advice please........

  • isn't there anyone that can help me? Pleeeeaaaaaaaase. I can really do with some reassurance\advice. If no one knows if I phone Corgi would they be able to help?
  • I think main bonding is covered by the electrical regs and not the gas regs.

BUT- there will be some scope for it to be included in the gas regs, but the actual regulation itself is an electrical one- I think!

    The main bond- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/earthing_main.htm

as far as I know is still a requirement under the new IEE rules, but I am not sure if the new rules now say something different about supplementary bonding http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/earthing_supplementary.htm

I believe that it is no longer necessary as long as all circuits in the house are RCD protected, but this means that if yours are not then they need to be supplementary bonded.

I think gas saftey certificates are for rented properties only.

There are a few corgi guys on here that will know for sure

    Hi,
I always bond the new pipe work just below the boiler. All pipes should be linked one to the other. This is in the regs so he should do it. Have you seen his CORGI Card? Has he completed the Benchmark card and Guarantee etc?

From what the OP said, all is OK as he states that "there is an eath bond on the gas supply within 300mm of the meter".

Ideally, there would be an additional bond next to the boiler but if the pipework is grounded near the meter then it is "legal".
  • He is corgi registered as he has the number on his website and I checked it out on the corgi website months ago.
I didn't get a benchmark card, but i did get the guarantee, but it was not completed.
Now I'm even more confused about the bonding.
  • barrymung, thanks for clarifying that it sounds ok. But why would an additional bond make a difference. Sorry, have not a clue about these things.

Earth bonding is required on the incoming rising main and on the incoming gas pipe within 600mm of the gas meter and before the first tee.

There is no requirement to bond every pipe coming from the boiler since 1-7-2008 17th edition electrical regs.

Before that, with the exception of bathrooms which have their own requirements, it was only necessary to bond below the boiler when installed in a kitchen.

The major reason for the change is the use of plastic pipe and fittings which is becoming more and more common.
  • All as per "EliteHeat" , quite correct, no problems.
