Visiting london:Oyster or travelcard?

I will be arriving at London Waterloo and taking 2 trains to Gatwick airport and if time permits taking a train back into london for an evening meal. i have been reading "visit london" and the "tfl" websites and dont know what is the cheapest/best option... if i buy an Oyster card for £12 will that get me to gatwick? or is the "all zone day travel card" a better option?

Many thanks!

I'd have a look at Southern Trains - they have day tickets that will reduce the cost of the train travel which is going to be a lot more than the cost of a one day travelcard (around £5.20)

You can get an all zone travelcard (£7.00 offpeak) and then get a ticket from "boundary zone 6" to gatwick - a cheap day return for this bit is £6.10.

Make it clear to people at the ticket office that you will be coming back the same day.

Do you need to travel around london? If not, a day return from LONDON TERMINALS (which in this case would be Waterloo, Charing Cross, Victoria, London Bridge, etc) to GATWICK AIRPORT is £11.10 (not Gatwick express).

Oyster (and travelcards) are NOT valid out to Gatwick - with a travelcard you can get the extension ticket referred to above.
