Financial help for student doctors

Hi,
I am a 28 year old social worker who lives and studied in Scotland. I graduated from my four year Honours degree earlier this year.
I intend to study medicine in two years time, but I am unsure if I am eligible for any financial assistance. Do student doctors get paid?
Thanks very much,
Will

I wish we got paid! I CAN'T WAIT for my first pay packet in August!!!
'Funding' depends on what course you apply for. Be aware though that the funding packages might change over the next few years.
Currently:
On a 5 year course, you are entitled to a student loan (maintainence) in years 1-4 (no fees help, no maintainence grant). In your final year you get your fees paid by the DH, a means tested bursary, and the non-income assessed part of the maintainence loan.
GEP, you are entitled to a student loan (maintainence) in year 1 (no fees help, no maintainence grant). Years 2-4 are as for year 5 of a 5 year degree.
HOWEVER, there is lots of talk of the GEP package being withdrawn, especially in light of the fees cap coming off in 2010, when it is feared fees for medicine could be about £10k a year!!! (figure from numberous Student BMA News editions)
I'm on a 5 year course, and will be graduating with around £50k of debt (and I like fairly frugally!)
Fluffy - second degree medic (final year)April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200
