Unconfirmed address (sorry!)

I've just refunded payment for a £50 voucher I sold today as the buyers address was unconfirmed and the transaction page in PayPal stated that the item was ineligible for seller protection. As the item sold for £30+, I'm not prepared to risk losing the money and the voucher. Am I right in thinking I wouldn't be covered even if I sent by SD? Trying to explain to OH why unconfirmed is a problem and I told him that it's because the buyer can chargeback the transaction as unauthorised and I can't claim from RM as it would show delivered - thereby losing the voucher, my money and my sanity!

Why do I feel so bad about doing this? I feel rotten :(. I know the new protection rules come in soon (they do seem a little ambiguous), but the payment clearly stated that the item was ineligible so I had to refund.

  • What was your buyer's feedback like? If it was good I'd have risked it, if not then you were right to be cautious and refund the payment.

Did you have an under bidder that you could give a second chance offer to?

The new rules (see Marty J's post on the useful tips sticky) mean you don't need a confirmed address any more.If you were ineligible then it might be your own account that needs verifying. You do run the risk here of a neg of course and a non performing seller complaint and your FVFs will still need to be paid.

Incidentally, my 8 year old paypal address with several thousand transactions on it has suddenly gone unconfirmed, so there may be a paypal glitch while they sort out the new rules.

Paypal are bringing it in now so that you would be covered when sending to an unconfirmed address, now sure when that starts though.

You are only covered by sending tickets by special delivery. You just can't send by recorded. Well u can but can't claim if they get lost.

Her feedback is under 100 items, all positive, all under £10 with the exception of 1 large item which was located close enough for her to have collected.

She seems very nice, I explained why I had refunded her payment and she apologised profusely and told me to send another invoice and she would pay immediately, so I've responded explaining about confirming her address and have held back on sending the second invoice in case she just pays it not realising her address is still not confirmed (I will send it shortly though).

I just feel rotten about it. I know paypal refunds take a while to go back into the bank, which can be a pain, although I did state about confirmed addresses in the listing, so I don't want her paying twice on an unconfirmed address.

I only sell about 2 things a year - can you tell :rotfl:

Thanks Soo. My account is several years old too, but is all confirmed and verified (I checked everything when the payment came through). My FVFs are paid as I always pay as soon as the auction ends, a neg and an NPS don't bother me too much as I sell so little now, maybe only 2 things a year.

My understanding of the new rules is that either eBay or PayPal are saying 01/10/08 and the other 07/10/08 or thereabouts, either way the item is definitely showing as ineligible and her address is showing as unconfirmed - everything else is ok!

With these new feedback rules, you can't tell if you have a bad buyer anyway!
New system sux for sellers and it makes feedback for the buyer a joke!
