a 3 inch scar is impressive my dd2 had her appendix out 2 weeks ago, her scar is slightly bigger- she was advised to have 2 weeks off school- goes back monday & to not participate in any PE lessons for a further 2 weeks. EMA payments are at the discretion of the college & your best bet is to approach the finance officer & if no joy there then try the head of college but to be honest I wouldn't hold your breath.

Would this also affect his bonuses?

I cant figure it out... they try to encourage teenagers to stay in education by offering EMA as an incentive, but if they are off sick they may not get anything..... If they work, they would more than likely receive sick pay.

EMA is nothing like work. It is an incentive to stay in education. He has no travelling costs or stuff to buy for college while he is not going. I thought EMA was to be used to pay for the extra costs incurred not as extra pocket money.

I am assuming it is approx 3 inch, not actually seen the wound as yet, but the dressing is about 5 inches in length.

The course he is on is physically demanding, its mostly dance of different types and drama. The surgeon we spoke to initially said it would be at least 6 weeks and not the usual 2 weeks due to the type of course hes on.
I rang the EMA and the first person who I spoke to put me on hold as she didnt know the answer, she asked her manager and they said it is at the discretion of the LSC, I have to ring the local LSC on Monday to find out more.

I never said it was like work. I said if he was in work he would probably receive sickness pay.

He uses his EMA towards driving lessons along with the bit of money he earns working on a Sunday. I try and support him with the cost of travel to and from college, lunches and equipment he needs as his EMA wouldnt go halfway to meeting the costs. It just seems a damn shame when it is no fault of his own that he now has to miss college, miss out on the EMA payments, miss out on the bonuses etc. He would love to go back to college tomorrow, but it would not do him any good and would probably end up having to have more time off.

If my son is ill I ring the school first thing. I then write a letter for him to take when he goes back. He then gets a form for the teachers to sign for the subjects he has missed to prove he has caught up with the work and then he gets paid.

There is usually someone responsible for ema who processes the payment every week. They are the people who really know the rules. You should be able to get through to them via sixth form and have your questions answered. Good luck!

The rules have been tightened from this week,we received an email to distribute to our students. They are much stricter.

When i was at college as long as any absense was classed as 'authorised' by parents i still got paid but that was in 2002-2004 not sure if they are all the same!

So many students have their parents so much under their thumbs that a parent's letter is pretty well worthless. EMA is supposed to be an incentive to attend regularly as well as stay in education; unless it's policed efficiently it doesn't work.

Really.. whilst I agree with the incentive behind EMA and think it is valuable for so many children, I do think that it isn't needed whilst someone is sick at home.

How many driving lessons will he be having post op?

They do put quite a big dressing on, with my dd they said to take the dressing off after 4 days and have a bath with no bubble bath etc.. then you will get an idea of how big it is. with regard to college my dd can return after 2 weeks of recovery but was not participate in physical activity for a further 2 weeks. Perhaps he can attend but undertake more theory of the subject rather than physical work. good luck though but I think you may have difficulty getting the EMA. it is unfair as no fault of his own. But to be honest he won't be able to drive for approx 4 weeks any way.

Took the dressing off on Sunday and the scar is about 4 1/2 inches! I was shocked, although it is nice and neat, nothing like the 1 1/2 inch scar the surgeon had said it would be!
