Renting with a pet

Due to a relationship break-up, it looks like I'm going to be entering the big bad world of renting by myself!
Does anyone want to share their views on renting if you have a cat? I really can't part with him, he's the only thing keeping me going at the moment. BUT, I notice a lot (most of) properties for rent all say 'no pets'.
Is this a general thing that letting agents put, or are they likely to change their mind if I ask nicely?

Hi Kate,
A lot of the time it's to do with the lease if you are renting an apartment, where it states that no pets are allowed and with others it down to the preference of the owners.
Always ask the letting agents to check with the owner first as they may not have an issue with a cat but would with a dog, I suppose it depends on the individual.0 -
Some accept pets - normally less desirable properties. I'm currently renting with 2 dogs. I rang agents and asked if any of their properties would allow pets. They phoned some landlords of the "not so nice" properties and I found a house. Though I live on my own but am renting a 3 bed house! Just tell the agents. This is the second time I've had to rent between buying in the last few years and both times I found a landlord who would accept the dogs.0

If you are on your own and just out of a relationship have you considered becoming a lodger? Might save you a bit of money whilst you get yourself sorted and if you go in with someone who is an animal lover you may have some friendly company and something in common from the start.
Of course your cat may not get on with their cat.... just an idea though.0 -
The house we used to rent didn't specify and after a while we decided we wanted cats. We just asked and they said yes and weren't bothered.0

Try the private ad's, mostly you will be able to talk to the LL direct and ask if they will let you rent with a cat. LA often say no as its their policy.
Also offer to pay a larger deposit and/or have the place fumigated / professional cleaned at the end of the tenancy. Most LL are worried that a pet will cause damage to furniture/carpets or about fleas. You may well have standards and your pet may well be well behaved but the LL will only have your word for it, so being prepared to put that in writing / money will go a long way.0 -

Hello hello,
We didn't have a problem talking around our landlord - we gave him a larger deposit and we have promised to hire a carpet cleaner when we move. But I do think it depends on your situation, we're young professionals with excellent references so I think our LL would have bended over backwards to have us after the horrors that were in the flat before us!The only thing worse than smug married couple; lots of smug married couples.0 -
How much extra would you pay to rent a place that allows pets?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

We paid an extra £150. Offer £100 extra and keep your fingers crossed. The only thing worse than smug married couple; lots of smug married couples.0

Sorry, that was on top of the usual deposit. In my last place they didn't ask for extra money they just wanted proof that the carpets had been professionally cleaned. The only thing worse than smug married couple; lots of smug married couples.0
