Hello everybody .. I'm a new poster and very glad to be here!

I have a very odd problem with my pre-pay electric meter however and I would like your advice as to what is the best action to take ... basically it seems that although it has been supplying me with power without problems, it is un-registered with any supplier!!

Normally I suppose this wouldn't be a problem for me .. I just put money in the key when required and all has been OK. Sadly though the meter has developed a fault in the last few days and is now not accepting any credit! I tried to put £5 in on Tuesday (30/10) and although the key still goes in fine .. the credit has not gone to the meter! I took the key back to the shop to check it out .. but apparently all the system can show is that the 'token is ready to accept credit' .. not any information about any credit still in it.

After a couple of phone calls (EDF and MPAS) it seems no-one knows anything about this meter.

So here is the problem .. how do I arrange for a repair to my installation if it doesn't 'belong' to anybody?

Luckily it's not critical .. I still have about 3 weeks of credit on it .. but I need to sort something out pretty soon now the weathers changing!

Thanks for any insights folks ..

  • Are you able to take down the meter serial number & phone back through to MPAS in your area? They should be able to give you more infomation with your meter serial number. Another thing to try is, on the meter as well it should say who the meter belongs to, for example "property of London Electric". If you then phone through to the distribation company in your area, it should come up on their computer who your supplier is.

Also, you say that you key meter is not accepting any credit. Does it come up with any error code when you put your key into the meter?

Look on the brightside...if the company you got the keycard from says the meter you have is not on their records, all the money you've been putting on that card is now sitting in your account giving you a nice big credit balance :D

Unfortunately, if you got the keycard off a previous occupant, you have been paying off his bill/debt - let's hope that's not the case here!

Well, time for a quick update here .. fortunately the meter has started accepting credit again! On a whim I went to another shop and put £1 on the key and it worked .. back to the shop and another pound has gone in so the key and meter are definitely still working. The £5 I put on the key originally seems to have gone though .. perhaps it got 'corrupted' somehow! .. and before someone here asks .. no, it wasn't on 'Emergency'!! .. they asked the same thing in the first shop. I've made sure that it has always been in credit since I moved in!

The only un-resolved issue now seems to be, who does this meter actually belong to! The markings on it are 'Seeboard' and a date sticker indicates the year 92 .. so I suspect the landlord has never actually had it callibrated or read in any way since then .. before de-regulation probably.

I think I'll leave it for the time being until it definitely needs repairing, then it's the landlords responsibility to sort it out!

Every key holds the info of the issuing company.( the shop can tell you this)
Your electricity supplier might not be your meter operator. The MOP is responsible for the meter.
If you are the tenant and your name is on the account, then you are liable for any shortfall.
If your landlord has included your electricity in with your rent, then you will be OK. If not, then you will be liable for any charges.
