I think you need the wired Ethernet cable when first configuring the router. Once it is configured then you don't need a cable so long as your PC has a wireless card connected to it.

If you want to use your laptops wirelessly you will need to run the installation disk that comes with the router & then enter the wep (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encyption key & password that also comes with the router. You will also need to connect the ethernet cable so it can connect itself to the router & configuire its settings.
    .
You can also use the ethernet cable if you dont want it wireless.

wep is weak security, wpa is better. you don't have to install the software, just hook it up and goto the the router login screen www.routerlogin.com

Wpa may be a better security programme, but needs a bit more technical know how on setting up. The info i gave was simply on getting started.

Please check the link below for more info on the pros & cons of Wep/Wpa.

  • So both wep & wpa can both be cracked!

Passwords & key can be changed very easily within the router settings.
My info was posted to assist the op in setting up her wireless bb on her laptops.

So long as you have a good strong password its still virtually uncrackable.
Its actually illegal to hack into someones bb without their permision.

  • In my opinion there is no need to get involved in changing to wpa if you are not having any probs

I use wep & have never experienced any probs.

Obviously its down to indavidual preference.

Source, please for WPA crackable if using a decent key. Please no references to distributed/super computer projects, but to something likely, ie someone cracking wpa in a reasonable timescale using a single laptop PC.

It is illegal to hack, so that'll stop them then!

The OP should take whatever reasonable method is the most effective, in this case, the option of WPA is there, it should be taken. The OP is, in theory, responsible for any data over their connection, if the OP used WEP, and someone came along and hacked it (under 30 minutes) they would be responsible for any illegal activity.
