Dear Moneysupermarket User,
The Nectar Credit Card from American Express is offering a special bonus for Christmas, exclusively for Moneysupermarket users.
Apply now for the Nectar Credit Card before the 31st December 2005 and if approved, you’ll receive an additional 5,000 bonus points (on top of the 1,000 bonus points you already receive if approved) when you first spend on the Card.* That’s an incredible 6,000 bonus points altogether – enough for 2 return tickets to Amsterdam! Of course you can also redeem your points for a whole host of other Christmas delights such as money off your shopping at Sainsbury’s, Debenham's or Argos, or treats and gifts such as electrical goodies and pampering indulgences!
And if that wasn’t good enough! When you take a look at the Nectar Credit Card from American Express, it’s got one of the lowest balance transfer rates around at 5.9% - and it's guaranteed for the life of the balance provided you move it over in the first six months of taking out the card.
You'd expect American Express to have trimmed back its usual cardholder benefits as a result, but it hasn't. You can still get purchase protection of up to £20,000 a year if items you've bought with the card are stolen or damaged in an accident within 90 days of purchasing them**, and you get protection for refunds*** and online fraud.****
So the standard variable rate on purchases must be through the roof to pay for all this then? Not at all. In fact it's a competitive typical 12.9%APR variable rate.
And of course there are the loyalty points. By using both the Nectar Credit Card and your Nectar loyalty card together at participating Nectar sponsors, you’ll earn up to 4 points for every £1 spent (that’s 2 points for using the Credit Card with the sponsor and 2 points for using your loyalty card with them). What’s more, shop elsewhere and you’ll also receive 1 point for almost every £1 spent – wherever American Express is welcomed.

Thanks for this post Cupra.
After initially reading it I was going to jump at the chance of applying for one of these Amex cards through Moneysupermarket as the offer of two free flights to Amsterdam sounded good. As the site said:
"That’s an incredible 6,000 bonus points altogether – enough for 2 return tickets to Amsterdam!"
Unfortunately I think it may be TOO good to be true. Have just tried to book ONE flight through the nectar site with points (obviously airport taxes, etc. will be an additional cost) from Leeds to Paris which isn't much further than going to Amsterdam. A free return flight would require 18000 points per person in March. Hardly a bargain! Reckon the quoted two return flights to Amsterdam could only be taken from London in low season or during the week. No good for a northerner like myself.
I think I will look this gifthorse in the mouth and say no thanks!
However, if anyone does want to take advantage of this card I would suggest they check out the Nectar website at https://www.nectar.com and see what they can get for there points before applying. Free entry to Mme Tussauds is 3000 points alone!0 -
you can get something much more useful...... £25 cash by applying for Amex thru quidco.......
nectar pts are worth b*gger all as far as i can see, i gave up on nectar a long time ago
6000 pts might get you a free cd from cdwow or something - i'd rather get the cash
(are't 6000pts worth £15 in sainsbury's/argos or somewhere?? I'd rather have cash)0 -
6,000 Nectar points gets you 4 free Cds or £30 from Sainsburys... not bad for applying.
Why wouldn't you apply for it?0 -
i thought 500pts was only worth £2.50.....?
my mistake....
still rather get the cash......0 -
Here's the math:
6,000 / 500 = 12 X 2.50 = £30
You'd get 12 £2.50 coupons from Sainsburys.0 -

£30.00 off your shopping at Sainsburys is as good as cash. What I think you should consider is which is the better value - money or points. As Brucie says, points make money - or is it prizes!! Oh well - same thing!!Before doing something... do nothing0 -
Nectar points are worth double at Adams Childrens Clothes store. If you haven't got children I realise that may not be that good for you but for me with 2 growing boys it is great. With these points I will have over £150 to spend in the sales. :j0

Be careful with the Balance transfer. I asked for one at 5.9% and was told this was OK.
However when I got the statement they were charging me 12.9
When i rang them they said they had a volume of calls took me 10 mins to get through
Then the call handler (India Call centre?) spent 2 mins telling what I already knew, how much left, to pat etc
I said I thought the balance rate rate was wrong, she put me on hold
se then get back to me and said I was being charged the correct amount o f interest
I then asked how they worked it out and if was definately wrong. Success :T ... well sort off have to see on the next statement she then said there was a technical problem and they were going to put it right.
Wont hold me breath tho as it did not inspire me with confidence :j0
