Decided on eON but not on whether to go with Economy 7 - HELP!!
Options
We are currently with Atlantic for our gas and electricity with Economy 7 and have decided to switch to a tariff that has a capped rate until 2010 as advised by energyhelpline.
What I am wondering is whether we should switch with or without economy 7?
Based on our last 6 month bill we used 3087 Units in the night verses 2046 units in the day.
We do not have storage heaters but time all the appliances (dishwasher/washing machine/tumble dryer) to come on once the night rate has started.
When I have looked at e-on's website I note that the costs per unit with economy 7 are cheaper across the board than with the non economy 7 option. Blow are the pricing options for both and I would appreciate any comments that you may have on them.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not sure but this is how looks to me. It would seem you are using a third of your electricity at night which suggests Economy 7 is best for you. However, I notice you are using an average of 27 units a day - over the summer - how? That's twice as many as us! An average of 9 units a night suggests appliances are running every night. So what are the daytime units?
You're using a bit less than us during the day and we run the dishwasher and washing machine on that. If you were using less during the day, the case wouldn't be so clear cut.0 -
I read your post but couldn't decide if you wanted an opinion or someone to work through the numbers for you.
You need to make clear what discount %age you are getting and if you think the totals and split of normal to E7 will continue to be similar in the next (autumn/winter) 6 months.
Edit: magentasue, unless I am reading it wrong they are using 60% (3087) at night and 40% (2046) in the day, which should easily make E7 worthwhile.0 -
Be aware that Eon will want you to have a new meter fitted if you want to move to a single rate tariff - they are one of the suppliers that can't add 2 numbers together obtained from a dual rate meter.
You will be charged by Eon for such a change. They will only accept you initially on a dual rate tariff since that is the meter you currently have.
I don't know how SSE (Atlantic) would treat this if you decided to switch to a single rate tariff before you switch supplier."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

i'm sorry but your completely wrong there, if you have a standard E7 meter and want to be billed on 1 rate you don't need your meter changing
anyways looking at your night usage E7 seems a good option, if you use at least 30% of your total usage at night it starts to get cheaper for you, oh and as you've signed upto energy saver 5 you get an energy saving monitor thats similar to the owl0 -

It is true that some suppliers will supply a single rate tariff even though the customer has a dual rate meter - but Eon were adamant they could not handle that.
Edit: See this thread of peoples experiences of which suppliers will want to change the meter (with an associated charge) and those that can add 2 numbers together

as far as im aware and also what i've dealt with many times that is not the case with standard E7 meters
sometimes these meters can vary from region to region like the 8.5 hour white meter in scotland thats when it might need changing, but not when it is only just standard E70 -
You do with Eon - that's what I was told many times when I was a customer of theirs.

Sorry Premier you are wrong. My Eon team regularly set people to single rate tariffs even though they have E7 and vice-versa. No meter change, no cost (as long as they have an E7 meter aready).0 -

Quite right. I got that wrong which makes it even more odd. 3087 units in the Econ 7 period means 17 units a night! I'd have to run all three appliances twice every night to use that.0 -
Hi there,
Thanks for the replies.
The usage is due to the fact that business runs from home, so a lot of the addition numbers are because of that.
If I understand correctly therefore it would be advisable to stick with Economy 7 as there is a lot of electricity used at that time?
Thanks again
