America return travel

I am hoping to travel to the USA later next year.
I would like to go out to Boston and back from New York.
Do I have to purchase a return ticket in order to enter the USA?, only I am thinking of buying single tickets to & from the USA and wondered if it is aceptable to the authourities over there in order to comply with their regs.
Many thanks in anticipation.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure!

Singles can work out very expensive.
You can buy an "open jaw" ticket, which in effect means you fly into one city and fly out of another.
Re the onward flight thing, I think it is a requirment that you have proof you don't intend to outstay your time in the states, how strongly enforced it is, i don't know."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -

A requirement for using the Visa Waiver Program is that you Have a return trip ticket to any foreign destination other than a territory bordering on the United States or an adjacent island so a ticket back to the UK is OK, but one to Canada isn't.

I agree with Pin that singles can work out expensive-if you can't get an open jawed ticket then why not get a return ticket from either New York or Boston then either drive or travel on public transport between the two cities-they are only about 200 miles apart
If you are travelling on your own or as part of a couple with no children,i would not recommend using a single ticket-i have found customs officials to be notoriously humourless & strict when it comes to documentation-i have even been questioned about visiting twice within 12 months to visit my brother

Have done this kind off trip with Virgin and using continental internal flight. Cost wasn't significantly more than a return. Booked those flights via Trailfinders. As Sunnydoo says BOS to NYC is possible on the train. Amtrak have a high speed east coast service (Acela) which takes about 3 hours. Which has got to be as quick as flying when you take check in and airport to city transfers, even though Boston Logan to the city is only about 10-15 minutes by taxi.0

You should be able to buy a return ticket with the outward flight destination as Boston and then the return flight originating in New York.
We did this earlier this year with American Airlines booking directly from their site, but others + consolidators (Trailfinders etc) will do this.
There should be little if no difference than buying a standard return flight.
You can travel cheaply between Boston and New York by China Bus Lines
We went with Fung Wah
at a cost of $15.00 each. Booked it over the 'net.
There are others and Greyhound\Peter Pan do a service but as a foreigner you can't book it ove the 'net.
Nice username, past life??0
